We have completed our commentary , it went really well. we did at the start have a script but as we went into the commentary we decided to just speak openly and freely about it we did not want a robotic commentry were we are staring at the script every second. we edited it in final cut and put in slides with questions to make it more intresting.

Planning for our Commentary

We would like to film our commentary in a classroom with the apple computer, we are keeping with a casual approach for our commentary because we believe this will compliment our music video. We are using the built in camera on the mac and have the music video in the bottom righthand corner. We are going to play the footage while speaking and occasionally zoom into the video to show clips.

Ryan Laxton and Kirsten Toye will both be answering all questions. Ryan will be starting questions 1 and 3 and Kirsten will be starting questions 2 and 4. We will both contributing to all the questions so its not just one person speaking.

Evaluation of Funny Games

After viewing this commentary we found that it dragged on a bit and we lost concentration. We think this is because there is only a few clips of the movie in the commentary. The commentator describes a lot about the film but doesn't us any clips to prove this. The constant change of language is confusing and not interesting. They could improve by having a english commentator translating what the french commentator is saying. They could also use some more clips of the movie to keep the viewer present.

Evaluation of An Education.

When viewing An Education commentary, we like the way they used the title and a clip from the  film at the beginning of the commentary. In this commentary they don't just use one commentator which we feel is good as the viewer won't find it uninteresting. The constant different shots in different locations with different people keeps the viewer wanting more. The shots show what the commentator is describing, this gets the viewer understanding what the commentator is saying. We like the way that when someone speaks it tells us the name of the person and what they are to the film. e.g Director. This is an inspirational commentary to us.

Evaluation of The Bourne Ultimatum

We have viewed The Bourne Ultimatum commentry and we found it mind opening. The commentator's style was metaphorical and in-depth. We like the way he approched different situations, without stating the obvious. We enjoyed the fact that the film was playing during the commentry and there wasn't text on the screen to confuse the viewer. The commentator's voice was strong and not monotonal, The viewer maintained focus at all times of the commentry. His voice was also understandable and clear. We think that this was a excellent example of a professional commentry.

Evaluation Feedback for all

Here is some generic feedback on the evaluations.
Please read it and decide which is relevant for you, make the appropriate changes and resubmit your evaluation questions to the blog by Wednesday 15th Dec.

Question One - Start by outlining the conventions of a music video of your genre, cite some of the examples you looked at (use screen grabs) and then discuss your own use of those conventions, illustrated by examples. You could benefit from discussing in a bit more detail the conventions of your ancillary texts and which ones you used and any you challenged or developed. Make it clear that you know what the conventions are and then discuss each one in turn.

Talk about the choices you made about your engagement with the conventions of your genre. Talk about how you engaged with the form of music videos, obviously it's very different from the narrative video forms you have worked on before. Also talk in detail about specific conventions you used and give examples from your texts. Talk about the video, the magazine ad and the digipak.

Question Two - on the combination of products you talk about the font and the colour design but I want you to talk more about the decision making process and how well you think these three products work as a package. Also talk about the representation of the artist in all three products, do they work in combination to communicate something specific about the artist.

Question Three - Mention all of the points at which you got feedback, pitch, rough cut, final cut, digipak and magazine ad draft and final versions etc. Also talk about peer feedback and using the class as a sample group of your target audience. In addition, talk about the feedback you received from me. Give specific examples in quotes and discuss how you responded to them individually.

Question Four - You need to flesh out this response. How did the technology limit you but also consider how it enabled you to be creative.

Ryans Evaluation

1. In what ways does your media product use , develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

I believe that our music video and theme challenges other conventions of media. Even though our video challanges conventions it also recongize's other animations but our type of animation is not following conventions. We have very much gone back to basics within our digipak basing our characters on stick people this has created a innocence to our work which is in juxtoposition to the actual lyrics. Our animation was inspired by other simplisitic animations like kate Nash - nicest thing. Simple animation holds more personality and originality. Our magazine advert has the characters from the video, the front is childlike and effective it complimants the characters. We have used the same characters in a different compostion on the digipack . we really enjoyed creating the magazine advert and digipack it made us become more creative in creating a dynamic theme. The video is conventional because alot of music videos rarely have animation and the ones that do are almost always state of the art animation , our music video creates a personality .

2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancilliary texts ?

Our product and ancilliary texts are both designed by our theme so both products relate and complimant eachother . We have scanned the characters into the computer and enhanced them on photoshop, our audience can make a connection between both forms of media. The digipak font is not present in our video , we discovered the font and found it effective for our digipak and magazine advert. Moreover we have taken screen shots from our video and placed them into our digipak so that the audience can clearly see the link. We chose the image of the two daughters and the wife because it is the main basis of our video and we believe this scene is the most reconisible.

3.What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

We have learnt that we have a bold product our audience like the theme and think it is effective , some think it could be abit to simplistic but overall we are really happy with the audience feedback. We were told to try and make transitions more smoother between frames so i went into final cut and blended the brightness and contrast within each frame this made the lighting and transitions smoother. In our first week our media video got over a 1,000 hits on you tube and we got further feedback on you tube from people saying they liked it but the audio was only in the left ear we then went back to final cut and corrected this.

QUOTE - The long duration shots give a story feel to the musiv video. The style is animation created by Istop motion, i think this works well because the lyrics are sad and it creates a contrast for the viewer. The pace of the music video fits the tempo of the song

4. How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

We have used many varied forms of technologies for instance ; final cut , photoshop , i stop motion and garageband. our main challenges were in final cut editing our i stop motion sequences and creating smooth transitions between key scenes. Furthermore researching other similiar videos was hard , Drive by Truckers dont have any music video's so for this task we really had to think outside of the box and make it our own. I stop motion helped us create our overall video we found it really user friendly and had a great time getting creative and inotive.
